"F" Connectors and Adaptors

Here's some knowledge for you on "F" Type, S-Video, RCA Connectors

These are the connectors you’ll find on the back of TVs, VCRs, and DVD players. The “F” connector

is the threaded coax connector used with CATV (Cable TV). It combines audio and video signals onto

a single connector. The RCA connector separates audio and video signals over different cables to

provide cleaner video. The S-video connector, found on DVD players, is a 4-pin mini DIN connector.

S-video provides very high video quality because it runs the black and white information and the color information over separate pins. Computer video can be displayed on devices with these connections by

using a hardware or software converter to translate horizontal and vertical scan rates.

How to fit "F" Connectors to coax cable

As published in "What satellite TV" magazine

1. About 25mm from the end, use a knife to cut around the outer plastic covering, which is called the jacket. Be careful not to cut the braided copper wires inside. Pull off the jacket and separate the braided copper wire then twist them together in a "pigtail".

2. Cut off the exposed metal foil shield.

3. Cut off the white plastic insulation to expose the inner wire core, leaving about 3mm of white plastic insulation. This reduced the risk of the brained copper wires touching the inner wire core which must never happen.

4. Push the copper pigtail back over the outer jacket and screw an "F" connector over it as far as it will go. Make sure that the inner wire core can not touch the braided copper wires.

5. Cut off the exposed pigtail.

6. Use sharp cutters to cut the inner wire core to leave about 3mm exposed. Make this cut a 45 degree angle to make a point. This makes it easier to push the wire into a connector without risk of damage or bending the wire. Be careful not to cut yourself.

7. Push on adaptors are also available. These screw into an "F" connector to turn it into a push on plug. Useful when you are using a satellite finder and also as an LNB selector.

PRO-CRIMP “F” CONNECTORS

For the perfect hex crimp every time. The PRO-Crimp “F” connectors have a machined hex crimp barrel

surface that will provide a professional looking crimp every time used. Use of the Philmore No. WS29 crimp

tool is recommended, but any hex crimp tool with a diameter of 0.358” will accomplish the task.

These PRO-Crimp “F’ connectors have the added bonus of an internal “O” ring to keep out the effects

of harsh environment without the need of the messy gel found in other weather proof connectors.

The PRO-Crimp “F” connectors feature a wider hex ring for a smoother look and ease of connection,

to the point of being able to use a hex wrench for tightening. The PRO-Crimp “F” connectors are

available with nickel or gold plate finishes and in sizes for RG59/U, RG6/U and RG6/U quad shield cables.
